STRINGS

The Melodina is a type of 15-string zither, belonging to the lap harp family. Originally from Europe, in Costa Rica, Kenneth Paniagua crafts a variant distinguished by a space beneath the strings, designed to store simple instructional sheet music. This feature makes it easier to play music without requiring advanced music reading skills, making it ideal for children due to its small size.

The Uakara is an instrument with 4 double strings, producing a unique sound from the two lowest pairs of strings, which are tuned an octave apart. This instrument is an original design handmade by luthier Israel Badilla (Getsemaní Guitarras), and as such, only a few pieces have been made. The wakara is typically tuned like the first four strings of a guitar, but Daniel Mora, the performer in this recording, tunes the fourth string to C instead of D, allowing for variations in fingering and creating different sound possibilities.

The vihuela is a small fivestring guitar, characterized by its rounded back. In Costa Rica, the vihuela is made in a Mexican style, different from its original Spanish version, and the example in these recordings was made by the Escazú luthier David Mora. The vihuela is primarily used to perform mariachi and Latin rhythms such as son jarocho and huapango, but with globalization, it has lost popularity
